Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall. Our first African-American justice on the US Supreme Court and chief architect of the strategy for the Brown v. Board of Education cases, which found that segregated schools were “separate, but not equal”.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Marshall applied to the University of Maryland School of Law and was denied because of his race.  He was accepted at the Howard University School of Law and after graduation, successfully sued the University of Maryland School of law and caused the school to desegregate.
