Zora Neale Hurston

An anthropologist and folklorist, Hurston is best known for her novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God", published in 1937.  All of her work focused on the African American experience in the early 1900s.  Her anthropology work and the films she produced preserved the sounds and stories of Black Americans that would have been forgotten.

In 1917, Hurston attended Morgan Academy in Baltimore, Maryland.  The academy would later become Morgan State University, an HBCU.
