Ida B. Wells. Investigative journalist and one of the founders of the NAACP. Put that into perspective...She was born into slavery in Mississippi, at 16 she lost both her parents to yellow fever, and somehow was able to become educated and started her career as a teacher. Eventually, she found her purpose as a journalist IN THE 1890's! She was very vocal about the lynchings that were occurring during the time and as a result, the newspaper that she owned, the "Free Speech" was burned to the ground by an angry white mob. That didn't stop her, but fueled her to continue her works that shone a light of the atrocities of the time.
