Harriet Tubman. As far as we are concerned, she is the mother of the civil rights movement. Born into slavery, she decided that freedom would belong to her people too. She escaped and made at least 13 missions back to Dorchester County, Maryland to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people. During the Civil War, she served as a scout and spy for the U.S. Army. She was also active in the fight for women’s suffrage.
